Velzy‘s farm book
This is the story written for my twin granddaughter to go with the book.
Today we are going to the farm. We know we are there when we see a big red barn. We are met by a gray dog with a wagging tail. He reminds me of Gracie.
Next, we see a rusty pick up truck full of eggs. It comes roaring down the dusty road.
The farmer gets out of it. He is old with white hair and dark skin from working in the sun. He tells us to go get an ear of corn on the cob and wait by the goats while he finishes his chores.
We stop by to see the goat who reminds us of rooftop Ralph the goat at Avila Valley Farm.
We walked past a duck in the water.
We’re going to feed the chicks says the farmers. My brother, C has already gone to gather up the baby chicks. We hear the rooster, he says “cock-a-doodle-doo.” And then we hear the henon her nest, “cluck cluck cluck cluck cluck.”
As we get on the tractor, the farmer tells us that the tractors work used to be done by a horse. Now we know what horse power means.
We ride past the animals and we see a pig that says oink, oink oink. Next we see the sheep they say baa baaa! They are fluffy and will make wool with their coats.
As we pass the cow she says moo and the farmer tells us that in Japan they rub their cows with beer which is why they say “more”.
The bull is out in the field and the farmer tells us he does not like to be around people who are wearing red and may charge the fence if we’re not careful.
We see the harvester out in the fields; it is picking broccoli.
As we ride past, we see a bunny with vegetables. The farmer tells us that even though the bunny eats some he also leaves good fertilizer to help things grow.
Next we feel the warm hug of a striped cat. The farmer tells us that the orange striped cat is a boy. The girl cat is a calico.
The farmer also tells us that the cat is useful for chasing away rodents and birds. The scarecrowalso keeps the birds out of the fields. The birds think it is a person and stay away from eating the tomatoes that are on the vine and the carrots that are in the ground.
We go past the rows of cherries in the orchard. The other trees are apples. The farmer tells us he has many kinds of cherries and apples and they come in different colors.
As we come back, we see our cousin N, as she waters the flowers. My brother, T, is planting seeds. My sister, J picked flowers for us to take home. It reminded us of that Hawaii is where we have pineapple and bananas. As we are leaving, we see a boy who carries the melons. We love watermelon. But most of all, I love strawberries and I am the girl picking the berries.
The farmer tells us we need to come back in the fall and get pumpkins for Halloween. We thank him kindly for the day but tell him that our Mimi has pumpkins growing for us in California and that they have our names growing on them too! She is waiting for us to pick them when we see her in October. It’s time to go home it’s been a busy day!
